There was no attempt to break into the home of the 55-year-old Kazakh expatriate who assaulted the two young Egyptians in Kallithea, mistakenly believing they were burglars.
According to the investigation by the Athens Security Division, the 55-year-old was informed by his wife that the two youths were photographing the house. She pointed them out to her husband, who followed them to the bus stop and brutally attacked one of them.
Police arrived at the scene and arrested both the 55-year-old and the two Egyptians, aged 21 and 22. The first suffered serious injuries from the bat and required transfer to the “Red Cross” Hospital for initial treatment.
The 55-year-old was charged with causing grievous bodily harm and violating weapon laws and was taken to the misdemeanor court, while the two Egyptians were charged with attempted theft. Photographing may be considered a preparatory act but does not constitute a break-in and could have been entirely unrelated.
In any case, the courts will decide the outcome for the two Egyptians. However, it is clear that the 55-year-old attacked without provocation and used extreme violence.
It should be noted that in a video that has surfaced -which NEWS 24/7 chooses not to reproduce- the tenant of the house is seen holding a blood-stained baseball bat and pressing down on the head of a bleeding man.
