Kyriakos Mitsotakis had communication with the President of Lebanon and the Prime Minister of Israel regarding the developments in the Middle East.

On Tuesday, March 3rd, Kyriakos Mitsotakis had telephone conversations with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

During these calls, the Prime Minister was briefed on the latest developments in Lebanon, indicating that Athens is concerned about the expansion of the warfront.

Mitsotakis acknowledged Israel’s right to self-defense, but emphasized the need to avoid further escalation and the opening of a new front through extensive ground operations in Southern Lebanon.

In his conversation with Netanyahu, they discussed the unprovoked attack on the Republic of Cyprus and the defensive support provided by Greece.

Earlier, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant had stated that the Israeli army would take control of “strategic areas in Lebanon” to stop attacks on Israelis living near the northern border.

This move represents a new blow to Lebanon’s sovereignty and the 2024 ceasefire agreement, which was brokered by the United States and had ended a year-long full-scale conflict between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.

According to Lebanese media, the Lebanese army has begun withdrawing from its positions in the South of the country.
