Earlier this week, residents of Naxos, particularly those living near the popular Plaka beach, were confronted with a bizarre sight.
A business operating in the area had placed a luxury burgundy-colored living room set on the sand (behind the sunbeds), along with two large logs serving as tables.
The apparent goal was to attract more tourists with this… luxury choice.
Beyond the issue of aesthetics (which one might say is subjective), there is also the question of logic. It has been repeatedly noted that Plaka is located in a Natura-protected area, and such actions severely damage the ecosystem in practical terms.
Because the example was so blatant, many people in Naxos mobilized. The outrage was widespread, and the controversial photos quickly circulated online. Ultimately, the public backlash had an effect.
By the next morning, around 10 a.m., the process of removing the furniture had already begun and was completed shortly afterward.
However, there is a tragic irony: in order to transport the furniture, the utility vehicle drove over the sand dunes, which is explicitly prohibited by law.
For now, the movement to “liberate” Naxos’ beaches from the grip of unchecked tourism has scored a symbolic victory.
The struggle, however, remains ongoing—for Plaka, which is also a nesting site for sea turtles, as well as for the other beaches on the island (and the Cyclades as a whole).
And this is noted with full awareness that businesses in Naxos advertise, without any hesitation, the placement of restaurant tables and chairs on the island’s beaches, using field photos that leave no doubt about their practices.
