The moment a Greek Navy petty officer broke into his former partner’s home in Glyfada, carrying a 10-litre container of petrol with the intention of setting the property on fire, was captured on surveillance footage.
Wearing a mask and a hood, the man entered the property using his own keys before attempting to cover a security camera with a cloth. Shortly afterwards, the apartment was engulfed in flames.
The victim spoke to the television programme Live News about the attack:
“I was at work and, at some point, I opened the security camera app and realised I couldn’t see anything from either of the two cameras. There was no picture. I called my sister, who lives upstairs, and as soon as she answered, she told me, ‘He set us on fire. He set the house on fire.’
“The police came to my workplace, and I went to give a statement. I never imagined that the things I used to see on television would happen to me. During an argument, he told me, ‘I will kill you.’ He said it twice in October.”
Father of 36-Year-Old Woman: “He Wanted to Kill Us”
“It was a miracle my daughter wasn’t inside,” the 36-year-old woman’s father told Live News.
“He had a history of violent behaviour. He threatened her. She had some red marks on her body. I’m only finding out about these things now myself.”
The woman had asked to end their relationship in early October. According to her father’s account, his daughter had been living through a nightmare, as the 46-year-old repeatedly harassed and threatened her while stubbornly refusing to leave her apartment.
“They had arguments and confrontations throughout October, and she told him to leave the house. During the final week, she told him to pack his belongings and move out.”
For the past ten days, the woman had been forced to stay with her parents because the 46-year-old continued occupying her apartment against her wishes.
Legal proceedings to obtain protective measures had already been initiated, and Saturday was supposed to be the final deadline for him to collect his belongings and leave the property.
Last night, under the pretext of returning the keys, he entered the apartment.
“It was around 8 p.m. He parked a little further away and came over. He went inside. He had planned it in advance,” her father said.
Knowing that nobody was home, he had enough time to pour petrol throughout the apartment and set it on fire.
Two Arson Attacks Within 15 Minutes
But his alleged actions did not end there.
Just minutes later, the suspect reportedly went to the home of another former partner in the same area and set fire to both her car and a neighbouring vehicle parked alongside it.
According to initial reports, the 46-year-old serves in the Greek Navy, specifically with the Underwater Demolition Command (OUK) in Skaramangas.
In addition to his military duties, he also worked as a referee at water polo matches.
He regularly posted dozens of photographs on social media showing himself officiating major matches in Greece’s top-tier men’s and women’s water polo leagues, as well as school championships, according to reports.
Both women have had the Panic Button emergency alert application installed on their phones. The 55-year-old woman, whose car he allegedly set ablaze, had already filed a domestic violence complaint against him.
The 46-year-old was located and arrested on the island of Lefkada, where he had fled following the arson attacks.
