“Is it possible in today’s democratic Greece for a hunger striker to die”, organizations, collectives and public figures from a broad social spectrum (workers, musicians, actors, MPs, professors, among others) stress in a joint statement expressing solidarity with the hunger strikers of the Occupied Prosfygika Community, Aristotelis Chantzis and Suzon Doppagne, while also making an appeal for their demands to be met.
It is noted that Aristotelis Chantzis is on the 140th day of his hunger strike and has been hospitalised since Monday afternoon (22/06) in an extremely critical condition at the Second Pathology Clinic of “G. Gennimatas” hospital, having developed acute Wernicke encephalopathy with diplopia, ataxic gait, and severe electrolyte imbalances. The second hunger striker, Suzon Doppagne, whose condition is described as concerning, is on the 55th day of food refusal.
The joint statement by hundreds of personalities from many and diverse professional sectors warns of the danger to the life of the hunger striker Aristotelis Chantzis, while simultaneously demanding the satisfaction of the demands “before it is too late.”
“The condition is extremely severe and continuously deteriorating”
“The hunger striker is hospitalised due to acute Wernicke encephalopathy with diplopia and ataxic gait, while also presenting severe electrolyte disturbances that predispose to life-threatening arrhythmias. His health condition remains extremely critical with very severe, refractory hypoglycaemic episodes, while due to a swallowing disorder in the context of muscular weakness he has experienced aspiration into the respiratory system and hypoxaemia,” the hospital doctors monitoring his condition at “G. Gennimatas” state in a new announcement issued today, Wednesday (24/06).
“The generalized severe muscular weakness has additionally affected the respiratory muscles and the muscles of the face and eyes. He is being administered inhaled bronchodilator medication and oxygen via nasal cannula,” they add, concluding:
“The condition is extremely severe and continuously worsening, while the ongoing complications make it life-threatening. The non-fulfilment of the demands immediately is equivalent to a death sentence.”
