A Greek court has sentenced three executives of Attikes Diadromes, the company responsible for operating the Attiki Odos motorway, to 10 months in prison over the hours-long entrapment of thousands of motorists during Storm Elpis in January 2022.
The three defendants were convicted of the misdemeanor offense of endangering the safety of transport. The court also recognized the mitigating circumstance of their previously lawful conduct and suspended the prison sentences.
At the same time, the Single-Member Misdemeanor Court of Athens acquitted the remaining three defendants in the case, including one executive of Attikes Diadromes and two executives of Attiki Odos S.A.
Court orders further investigation
In line with the prosecutor’s recommendation, the court also ordered that the trial records be forwarded to the Athens First Instance Prosecutor’s Office to examine whether any criminal offenses may have been committed by the former Director of the Attica Traffic Police and the former Traffic Police commander responsible for the Attiki Odos motorway.
During the trial, prosecutors had recommended that four of the six defendants be found guilty.
The case stems from the severe disruption caused by Storm Elpis in January 2022, when heavy snowfall left thousands of drivers stranded for hours on the Attiki Odos motorway, triggering widespread public outrage and prompting multiple investigations into the handling of the crisis.
