A severe incident with a tragic outcome occurred in the early hours of Wednesday (May 20) inside the Attica Psychiatric Hospital “Dafni,” resulting in the death of a patient.
Specifically, a 48-year-old resident allegedly strangled a 59-year-old patient with whom he shared the same room. Initial reports indicated that the incident took place inside the hospital ward following an altercation between the two men.
“At 3:30 AM on Wednesday, a patient fell from his bed. The nurses heard him immediately and rushed to the spot,” Michalis Giannakos, president of POEDYN (Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees), told NEWS 24/7.
“The nurses found that the 59-year-old was unconscious, with no pulse or breath. They immediately alerted internists and psychiatrists. They performed CPR for an hour and a half, but were unable to revive him,” Mr. Giannakos added.
According to the president of POEDYN, “the police were notified, and his 48-year-old fellow patient stated that he was the one who choked him.”
“A forensic pathologist arrived at the scene to determine whether what the 48-year-old confessed to is indeed the case,” Mr. Giannakos concluded.
The alleged perpetrator has been arrested, and the preliminary investigation into the case has been taken over by the Chaidari Crime Prevention and Detection Department, which is investigating the exact circumstances under which the incident occurred.
