Four regions are placed on red alert ahead of the upcoming bad weather, “Adel”. These are areas in Western Greece that have already been affected by heavy rainfall in the past few days.

Red alert in four regions due to incoming storm “Adel”.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has placed four regions on a Red Code alert from tomorrow until Friday, following the upgrade of the weather warning by the National Meteorological Service (EMY) and the recommendation of the Risk Assessment Committee.

These regions include the Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Greece, and the Peloponnese, along with their municipalities.

According to sources from the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, other regions of the country may also be placed on Red Code alert tomorrow.

The Risk Assessment Committee met due to the bad weather “Adel,” which is expected to bring heavy rains and thunderstorms.

According to the scientists on the Committee, the phenomena are expected to hit the western-northwestern part of the country, the northern Ionian (mainly the Corfu area), Epirus (mainly the coastal areas), many parts of Western and Northern Greece, as well as the Eastern Aegean.

More specifically:

On Wednesday, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in Western Greece, especially in the northwest, and from the evening, in Eastern Macedonia.

On Thursday, heavy rain and thunderstorms will be especially strong in Western Greece, Central and Eastern Macedonia, and Thrace.

As emphasized by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the Unified Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK) will communicate with local authorities to convene immediate Civil Protection Councils and with all involved agencies to ensure full awareness of the impending weather phenomena and to be placed on operational readiness.

The Committee will meet again tomorrow to assess the expansion of the phenomena on Friday.

Notably, Corfu and Epirus were heavily affected by the heavy rains last week and were declared in a state of emergency.

Thodoris Kolyda’s Announcement on Storm Adel

“Storm Adel may have begun today, but the most critical 48-hour period will be Thursday and Friday, when the highest rainfall totals are expected, both in the already affected regions of Northwestern Greece and in parts of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace and the islands of the Eastern Aegean.”

This worsening weather event will now take the form of a “bad weather alert” with a warning of Dangerous Weather Phenomena – according to the naming system used by Greece, Cyprus, and Israel – under the name #ADEL. It is crucial in the coming hours and days to follow the official EMY bulletins that will specify the areas and times of intense weather phenomena, as well as the guidelines from Civil Protection, which must be followed without delay. A new emergency bulletin will be issued shortly.

The new storm is named Adel, a name of Israeli origin, typically used as a female name with roots in Jewish tradition. The name “Adel” reminds us that the naming system for storms in the Eastern Mediterranean is a joint effort between Greece, Cyprus, and Israel – and each name carries a piece of the identity of the three countries. The storm naming system was created to facilitate public information, prevention, and timely action.

Below is the cumulative rainfall forecast for the next four days, which gives a general idea of which areas will receive the heaviest rainfall. The EMY bulletins will provide more accurate information, and local specifics will be examined.
