The government is attempting to dismantle the farmers’ demands in order to break the broad social support for the agricultural mobilizations.
Against the backdrop of opinion polls showing that eight out of ten citizens support the farmers’ demands, the government argues that most of these demands are already being implemented, while the remainder are fiscally unfeasible.
Specifically, the government maintains that:
“Twenty of the 27 farmers’ demands have either already been implemented or are under consideration with a view to being implemented.
The remaining seven cannot be resolved, either because they run up against fundamental European rules and the operation of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), or because they are fiscally unfeasible.”
