Alongside the Bulgarian who fired the shots were the well-known Albanian criminal Rizaï and the chief warder on duty. The investigation conducted by officers of the Homicide Department of the Directorate for Combating Organised Crime (DAOE), together with officers of the Lamia Security Division, into the homicide that took place late yesterday afternoon at Domokos Prison is in full progress.
Approximately one hour before the prison was due to lock down, at 7pm, according to the claims of those involved, the Greek life-sentenced inmate — known from the 2021 murder case of a businessman and his wife in Zakynthos — allegedly attacked the chief warder on duty with the intention of killing him, using a revolver, which remains unknown how it came into his possession.
At that moment, inside the chief warder’s office, along with the chief warder, was the Bulgarian national convicted of carrying out the execution of businessman Giannis Makris in Voula in October 2018. Also present was the notorious Albanian criminal Alkis Rizaï, a former associate of Vassilis Paleokostas.
According to their claims, the Bulgarian rushed at the Greek inmate, disarmed him and, during the struggle, shot and killed him. He reportedly fired three times, two of the bullets striking the victim in the head.
A team from the Homicide Department is at the scene to investigate the exact circumstances of the incident and to determine whether the account given by the other three individuals involved is accurate or whether something different occurred that they are attempting to cover up and present in this way.
There are no cameras covering the chief warder’s office. From statements taken from other inmates so far, some confirm the events as described by those directly involved, others say they saw nothing, and others claim they know nothing.
As the case is marked by significant gaps — including how the revolver ended up in the life prisoner’s hands and how events unfolded in a space without cameras despite the presence of those there — the investigation remains ongoing. The Bulgarian inmate has been arrested and a case file has been formed against him on charges of homicide.
