Haris Theocharis will represent our country at the Peace Council on Gaza, as Mitsotakis will be in India; however, he will attend as an observer, since Greece does not participate in this body.

In an effort to maintain a balance with the administration of Donald Trump without, however, allowing our country to become entangled in the creation of an alternative to the UN, the government is sending Deputy Foreign Minister Haris Theocharis to the Peace Council on Gaza as an observer.

Government officials stress that Greece is not participating in the Peace Council and recall that the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, will be in India on an official visit on those dates.

Specifically, the Prime Minister will be in New Delhi on 18 and 19 February. It is worth noting that the Prime Minister of India is also not expected to attend the Council on Gaza, and therefore it was decided not to cancel the meeting between the two leaders.

The first session of the Peace Council on Gaza will take place on 19 February in Washington.

Along the same lines, Cyprus has also announced that it will be represented by an observer at Trump’s Peace Council. It is recalled that the US President recently once again invited Greece and Cyprus to the “Peace Council” on Gaza, placing both countries in an awkward position.

The problem with Trump’s Peace Council

The problem, of course, is that Trump is essentially attempting to create an international organisation controlled by himself, which would effectively replace the UN. And although the UN has long been weakened, both Greece and Cyprus rely on its resolutions to support their national positions, on the basis of international law.

According to information, Greek concerns regarding anything that even indirectly questions the pillars of international law (in this case the UN) have been duly conveyed to the Americans.

It is recalled that approximately two weeks ago Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis held a telephone conversation with his counterpart Marco Rubio. At that time, beyond the key issues of bilateral cooperation, the matter of Greece’s distance from the presidential initiative was raised and, of course, Athens’ position on issues such as the Peace Council was also discussed.

However, the main “players” of the EU — namely France, Germany and Italy — also disagree with Trump’s Peace Council. By contrast, Viktor Orbán has announced that Hungary will participate.
