A 46-year-old man, the father of a 6-year-old child, lost his life from a myocardial infarction on Clean Monday. Three days earlier, he had visited the Skyros Multi-Purpose Regional Medical Clinic complaining of chest pain.
According to reports, the 46-year-old visited the clinic on Friday, 20 February, reporting severe discomfort, chest pain and coughing.
According to complaints broadcast by Mega, the doctor who examined him allegedly diagnosed pneumonia, prescribed medication and advised him that, if his symptoms persisted, he should travel to Kymi for further examination.
Speaking to the same outlet, the man’s aunt claimed that he did not receive the necessary attention. As she stated, the 46-year-old continued to suffer from severe chest pain throughout the weekend.
On Clean Monday morning, his condition worsened, with intense shortness of breath and persistent chest pain.
Attempting to travel to Kymi, he boarded the scheduled ferry, where, according to testimonies, crew members realized the seriousness of his condition and arranged for his return to the clinic for immediate medical assessment.
He was subsequently transported by ambulance to Kymi and then to “Evangelismos” Hospital in Athens. Doctors determined that he had suffered a heart attack; however, the 46-year-old died from cardiac arrest.
The exact causes of death are expected to be clarified following the autopsy results.
Announcement by the 5th Health Region
In an official statement, the 5th Health Region of Thessaly and Central Greece reported that the 46-year-old arrived at the Skyros Multi-Purpose Regional Medical Clinic on Friday, 20 February 2026, at approximately 15:00, accompanied by his wife.
According to the Health Region, he was ambulatory, worked on the scheduled ferry, presented with a severe dry cough and was afebrile. He was examined by a specialist internist, received medication and instructions, and left without exhibiting cardiac symptoms.
On Clean Monday, at approximately 08:30, he returned to the clinic with chest pain, accompanied by a colleague. He underwent an electrocardiogram performed by a rural service doctor and was examined by both the on-duty internist and a private cardiologist who was called to the clinic. With suspected myocardial infarction, four electrocardiograms were conducted, he was administered antiplatelet therapy (Plavix), received a subcutaneous heparin injection and, as noted, the prescribed medical protocol was followed.
At 09:40, he was transported by ambulance from the Skyros clinic, accompanied by a doctor and under continuous monitoring, to the port, where he boarded the ferry bound for Kymi. From there, he was received and transferred to the Emergency Department of the General Hospital of Kymi. Following further cardiological examination, laboratory tests and a cardiac ultrasound, he was transferred to “Evangelismos” Hospital, where he passed away.
