Firefighters killed in Rethymno: Vehicle malfunction among scenarios under investigation

One of the scenarios being investigated in recent hours in connection with the double tragedy involving the deaths of two firefighters is that their service vehicle may have developed a mechanical problem.

The possibility that the service vehicle used by the two firefighters, who tragically lost their lives during the operation to extinguish the fire that broke out at midday on Wednesday (29/7) in the Krya Vrysi area of Rethymno, suffered a malfunction is among the scenarios currently being examined.
According to cretalive.gr, investigators are looking into whether the vehicle may have broken down, forcing the firefighters to abandon it.
Colleagues of the two victims said that dust, embers and ash may have damaged the filter, causing the vehicle to suddenly stall.
Meanwhile, investigations are continuing in the area under extremely difficult conditions by a team from the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes, which arrived in Crete from Athens on Wednesday (29/7), to determine the causes of the deadly wildfire.
Their funerals are being held today
The funerals of the two firefighters are being held today, Thursday, 30 July.
More specifically, the funeral of 25-year-old Pantelis Diamantakis was held at noon at the Church of Agios Nektarios in Episkopeio, Fourfouras, Amari, while the funeral of 58-year-old Manolis Stratidakis will take place at 5 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Gerakari, Amari.
