Strong Winds with Gusts Exceeding 100 km/h Over the Next 48 Hours – Attica in the Spotlight

A warning has been issued as winds are expected to reach peak intensity over the next 48 hours. Which areas will be most affected, and where are the strongest gusts forecast?

Wind gusts that are expected to exceed 100 km/h in some areas will sweep across several parts of Greece today and tomorrow, Friday (August 14), while the northerly winds are forecast to gradually weaken from Sunday (August 16), according to meteorologists.
Over the next 48 hours, the areas expected to be at the center of the strong winds include Attica, Boeotia, Evia, Crete and Andros. The combination of gale-force winds with high temperatures and the prolonged dry conditions of recent days significantly increases the risk of wildfires and their rapid spread.
According to Meteo, the meltemi winds will strengthen over the Aegean and eastern mainland Greece from Thursday (August 13), reaching locally 7 Beaufort (average wind speed), and rising to 7-8 Beaufort (average wind speed) from Friday (August 14).
According to the high-resolution forecasting models of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, wind gusts are expected to temporarily exceed 100 km/h in parts of the Aegean, Crete and eastern Central Greece, including Attica.
The maps below show indicative forecasts for maximum wind gusts expected on Thursday afternoon (August 13) and Friday afternoon (August 14) in eastern Central Greece and the Peloponnese, as well as the northwestern Cyclades.
As shown on the maps, on Thursday (August 13), gusts are expected to exceed 100 km/h in southwestern parts of Boeotia, northern parts of Attica, Mount Dirfys in the mountainous areas of Evia, and southern parts of Evia.
On Friday (August 14), gusts exceeding 100 km/h are expected in southern Evia and southwestern Andros.
It is also noted that strong gusts, potentially exceeding 100 km/h, are expected in other parts of the Aegean and Crete.
