Fyli Avenue: What we know so far about the crash that killed a 17-year-old girl

Traffic Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash on Fyli Avenue, in Fyli, in the direction of Athens.

The crash resulted in the death of a 17-year-old girl who was travelling in the same car with two other girls and two boys.

According to the evidence gathered so far, there is a left-hand bend at the point where the accident occurred.

Based on the preliminary assessment by Traffic Police officers, the vehicle — possibly travelling at high speed — veered off the road after the 19-year-old driver lost control and struck a curb on the right-hand side.

The car then mounted the pavement and crashed into a streetlight pole, uprooting it due to the force of the impact, before finally coming to a stop several metres away.

Traffic Police officers, EKAB ambulances and firefighters were dispatched to the scene, with the Fire Service assisting in freeing the occupants from the vehicle.

The 17-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. Of the five people in the car, the 19-year-old driver and two girls, aged 17 and 18, suffered minor injuries.

Another 19-year-old male passenger was not injured.

They were all taken to KAT Hospital for first aid and medical treatment.

The driver underwent an initial breathalyser test, which came back negative. However, a blood sample was taken at the hospital for toxicological testing, as is standard procedure in such cases.

A case file was opened against the driver. As he is currently serving his compulsory military service, the military prosecutor was informed and verbally ordered his release pending completion of the preliminary investigation. The case file will subsequently be forwarded to the military justice authorities for further action.
