Laboratory tests showed that the items are in fact plastic products made from melamine resin. EFET has ordered their immediate recall from the market.

The Hellenic Food Authority (EFET) is recalling plates, food containers and sets of ladles sold as bamboo products, urging consumers who have purchased them not to use them.

As part of its 2026 Sampling and Analysis Programme, EFET’s Attica Regional Directorate collected samples of products labelled:

  • “SPRING bamboo plate, Made in P.R.C.”
  • “Bamboo Fiber – Natural Collection food container, Made in P.R.C.”
  • “JULONG COMMODITY Life Style bamboo ladle set, Made in P.R.C.”

The products are imported by “SPRING DEPARTMENT STORE I.K.E.”, based in Agios Ioannis Rentis.

The products were examined by the Second Department of the Second Chemical Service of Athens of the General Chemical State Laboratory and were classified as “non-compliant”.

According to EFET, although the packaging presents them as bamboo products, laboratory analyses showed that they are plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, manufactured from melamine resin.

EFET noted that this labelling and presentation could mislead consumers as to the nature and composition of the products.

Furthermore, bamboo, whether in flour or fibre form, is not included on the EU list of authorised substances for use in the manufacture of plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. Consequently, plastic products containing bamboo may not be placed on the market.

EFET has ordered the immediate recall of all the specified products, as well as similar products, while relevant inspections are already under way.

Consumers who have purchased any of the above products are urged not to use them.
