Explosion at Motor Oil: One of two injured workers dies

One of the two workers who had been hospitalized in critical condition following an explosion at Motor Oil’s facilities has died.

A 43-year-old worker who had been hospitalized following the explosion at Motor Oil’s facilities in Agioi Theodoroi has succumbed to his injuries.

A 53-year-old man was also seriously injured in the explosion and remains intubated in the intensive care unit (ICU) with traumatic brain injuries.
The incident occurred at 11:00 a.m. on Friday during preventive maintenance work carried out by an external contractor.

Motor Oil’s Statement on the Worker’s Death

Shortly after news emerged that one of the two injured workers had died, Motor Oil issued the following statement:

“It is with deep sadness that we learned that one of the two employees of a contracting company working with us, who were seriously injured in today’s accident, has passed away despite the efforts of medical staff.

The condition of the second injured worker remains critical. The company’s management and all its employees extend their sincere condolences and pledge to stand by the victim’s family.

The competent authorities are investigating the causes of the fatal accident, and the company is cooperating fully with them.”

Timeline of the Explosion at Motor Oil’s Facilities

The maintenance work was being carried out outdoors, at a reactor unit, when a sudden pressure release and explosion occurred at a cover, seriously injuring two workers who were working at the site.

The explosion occurred without ignition, meaning that no fire broke out.

According to information obtained by NEWS 24/7, five people were injured in total, two of them seriously (men aged 41 and 51), while the other three sustained minor injuries.

The two seriously injured workers were initially transported to Corinth Hospital in private ambulances operated by Motor Oil, which also maintains its own firefighting vehicles.

They were immediately intubated after doctors assessed their condition as critical and were subsequently transferred to Thriasio Hospital.

However, one of the two injured workers succumbed to his injuries shortly before 5:00 p.m.

According to available information, all work at the facility has been suspended, and an investigation into the circumstances of the incident is underway.

Representatives of the Labour Inspectorate (SEPE) visited the site to document the incident.

Shortly after the explosion, the contractor responsible for the external maintenance crew was taken to the Agioi Theodoroi Police Station for questioning. However, following the death of the 44-year-old worker, he was arrested on the orders of a prosecutor.
