Kimolos: 17-year-old dies after being electrocuted in bathroom

A tragic incident occurred on the island of Kimolos, where a 17-year-old lost his life after suffering a fatal electric shock while preparing to take a shower.

According to information reported by cyclades24.gr, the tragedy occurred on Sunday afternoon at the house where the teenager was staying with his mother. The family lives permanently in Ireland and had travelled to Kimolos, his mother’s place of origin, for their summer holidays.

Initial assessments point to a possible fault or electrical leakage from the water heater. However, the exact cause has not yet been determined and is expected to be established through a technical investigation, a post-mortem examination and evidence being gathered by the police.

Investigation into the electrical installation

The house is reportedly an older property and, according to information, its electrical installation dates back to before the 1970s. Particular attention is being paid to reports that the electrical panel was not fitted with a residual-current device (RCD). This is a safety mechanism that detects electrical leakage and immediately cuts off the power supply, reducing the risk of electrocution.

Authorities are also investigating the electrical installation certificate for the property. All relevant documents are expected to be examined as part of the preliminary investigation in order to determine whether the required safety standards had been met.

The 17-year-old’s body is being transferred from Kimolos to Piraeus, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out today, Wednesday, August 12.
