Kolonos: How the Explosion Occurred, What Authorities Are Investigating – Condition of the Injured

The Hellenic Police are focusing their investigation on the circumstances surrounding an explosion that occurred on Wednesday afternoon (21 October) at the entrance of an apartment building on Platonos Street in Kolonos. The Security Division is currently handling the case.

According to the sequence of events, police received a call requesting an inspection of a bag reportedly containing drugs at a building located at 142 Platonos Street.

When Security Division officers arrived at the scene, they located the bag. Upon attempting to open it, they discovered drugs as well as an explosive device. The device detonated during the police investigation, seriously injuring the Security Division officer conducting the inspection.

A large police presence, along with fire brigade units, was immediately dispatched to the scene.

Four Injured, Including Two Police Officers

A total of four people were injured in the explosion.

More specifically, three of the injured — two civilians and a female police officer — were taken to Evangelismos Hospital with minor injuries caused by shrapnel to their faces and bodies. According to medical sources, all three are fully conscious and able to communicate normally.

The seriously injured police officer was transferred to the 401 General Military Hospital, where he is expected to undergo surgery. His life is not in danger.

Initial Assessments

For the time being, the investigation is being conducted by the Security Division rather than the Counterterrorism Unit.

Initial assessments suggest that the incident is more likely connected to a drug-related case, given that illegal substances were indeed discovered inside the suspicious bag.

However, the reason an explosive device was placed inside the bag, as well as its intended target, remains unclear.

Investigations are ongoing, and no possibility has been ruled out.
