Patras is mourning the loss of a 52-year-old father and his 17-year-old son, who were killed in a tragic motorcycle crash on Sunday (May 31).
The accident occurred on the road leading from the city toward Rio, near the Patras Ring Road, at a location where, according to reports, roadworks have been ongoing for more than a decade.
Under circumstances that remain unclear, the 52-year-old rider lost control of the motorcycle while descending a downhill section of the road. The vehicle struck the safety barriers, skidded for several meters, and eventually crashed into a concrete divider.
The impact was devastating, killing the 17-year-old instantly. His father was rushed to the University General Hospital of Patras in Rio, where doctors fought for approximately 45 minutes to save his life, but were ultimately unsuccessful.
Authorities are investigating the exact causes of the tragedy and examining all available evidence. Particular attention is being given to footage from a recording camera reportedly mounted on the 52-year-old’s helmet, which could prove crucial in shedding light on the circumstances of the crash.
The deaths of the father and son have deeply shocked the local community. The 17-year-old was a second-year high school student at the Experimental School of Patras and a basketball player for Panachaiki. Friends, classmates and teammates have been paying tribute by leaving flowers and lighting candles at the scene of the accident.
