The Civil Protection mechanism is on heightened alert due to Storm AGNETA, which is affecting the country and is expected to continue through tomorrow, Tuesday (November 3), bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms and possible localised hailstorms.
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has placed seven areas of the country under Red Code mobilisation status, as the risk of flooding is considered high.
The Civil Protection Coordinating Body met in the presence of the Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Evangelos Tournas. The meeting was preceded by a session of the Risk Assessment Committee, following the issuance of an updated Emergency Bulletin for Dangerous Weather Phenomena by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY).
The minister called for full operational readiness, the timely deployment of forces to areas facing an increased flood risk, and continuous cooperation with municipalities and regional authorities.
At the same time, he urged citizens to avoid travelling during thunderstorms and to follow the instructions of the competent authorities, particularly with regard to bans on crossing dangerous locations.
How Storm Agneta will develop – The areas under “red” warning
According to the scientists on the Risk Assessment Committee, the most severe weather phenomena are expected in the following areas:
Eastern Aegean and Dodecanese: From Chios southwards, until late on Monday night (November 2).
Corfu, Paxos and Epirus: Mainly in the coastal areas of Epirus, from Monday evening, through the night and until Tuesday morning (November 3).
Central and Eastern Macedonia, Thasos, Samothrace and Thrace: During the night and through Tuesday (November 3).
Northeastern Aegean islands: Lemnos, Agios Efstratios and Lesvos, during the night and through Tuesday (November 3).
Rain and thunderstorms are also expected across the rest of the country, with severe conditions in some areas.
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection announced that the following areas have been placed under Red Code mobilisation status for Monday, November 2, and Tuesday, November 3:
- Region of the Ionian Islands
- Region of Epirus
- Region of Western Macedonia
- Region of Central Macedonia
- Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace
- Region of the North Aegean
- Dodecanese Regional Units, in the Region of the South Aegean
The decision was taken on the basis of EMY’s updated emergency bulletin and the Risk Assessment Committee’s opinion, as the risk of flooding in these areas is considered high.
According to the Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Red Code status entails the full mobilisation of the National Mechanism, with the necessary personnel and available resources activated to respond to emergencies.
Municipalities and regional authorities have been instructed to immediately convene the competent operational coordination bodies in order to assess prevention and response measures for possible flooding.
The National Coordination Centre for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK) is in continuous contact with local authorities and the agencies involved, while the Fire Service remains on operational alert.
