Syros death investigation focuses on seven missing seconds of video

A 41-year-old man accused in connection with the death of an emergency medical responder on the Greek island of Syros remains under house arrest while awaiting a decision on whether he should be remanded in custody.

The case has been referred to the Council of Misdemeanour Court Judges following a disagreement between the investigating magistrate and the prosecutor. Until a final decision is issued, the suspect must remain at home and has had his passport confiscated.

His 30-year-old wife, who faces a charge of complicity in the killing, was released after giving evidence. She has been prohibited from leaving Greece and must report to her local police station on the first day of every month.

What the two defendants told investigators

Following a lengthy hearing, the investigating magistrate ruled that the 41-year-old, who faces a charge of fatal bodily harm, should be held in pretrial detention.

The prosecutor, however, recommended that he be released under restrictive conditions, leaving the Council of Misdemeanour Court Judges to make the final decision.

According to reports, the 30-year-old woman claimed that when she opened the door of the house, she saw the victim wearing dark clothing, with her face covered and holding a knife.

She reportedly told investigators that she feared for her life and began calling for help. Her husband then came to her assistance after hearing her screams.

She repeated the claim that both she and her husband had acted in self-defence, believing that an unknown person was attempting to break into their home.

The 41-year-old reportedly said that he injured the woman with a knife that had been lying on the table where he was eating and then chased her as far as the stairs outside the property.

According to his account, when she collapsed a few metres from the entrance, he removed the hood covering her face to identify her. He then realized that she was the emergency medical responder.

Digital devices and seven missing seconds under scrutiny

Before the defendants gave their statements, investigators reconstructed the events at the house where the incident occurred.

The investigating magistrate, prosecutor and both defendants were present during the reconstruction.

Authorities are continuing to examine the couple’s digital devices, focusing on communications exchanged before the incident and footage recorded by the home’s security camera.

Investigators are paying particular attention to a seven-second gap in the video footage, covering the period between the victim entering the property and later being seen running away.

Police are trying to establish exactly what happened during those seven seconds in order to clarify the circumstances surrounding her death.

The investigation is also examining a reported burglary at the couple’s home several days before the incident to determine whether it may be connected to the case.
