The Thessaloniki Public Prosecutor’s Office has ordered an investigation into the causes of fires that have broken out in areas of the city.

The head of the Thessaloniki Court of Appeals Prosecutor’s Office, Leonidas Nikolopoulos, has requested a preliminary investigation into whether power cables belonging to HEDNO may have been responsible for causing fires in Thessaloniki.

The investigation was prompted by media reports containing allegations that electricity grid cables may have played a causal role in the outbreak of fires.

In an order to the Thessaloniki Public Prosecutor’s Office, the senior prosecutor called for the matter to be thoroughly investigated and for authorities to determine whether any criminal liability arises.

As part of the preliminary investigation, statements are expected to be taken from relevant Fire Service officials and HEDNO executives.
