Thodoris Kolydas’ forecast for the weather during the second ten-day period of July.

Warmer weather is expected from July 11-12 onwards, according to a new post by meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas.

The rise in temperatures appears more likely in Larissa, Athens and Thessaloniki, milder in Patras and Kavala, and more limited in Heraklion.

The chances of significant rainfall remain generally low, he adds, while in a previous post he clarified that the available forecasting data do not currently support scenarios of an imminent extreme heatwave in Athens.

Weather: Forecast data for the six major cities

According to Mr Kolydas, in Athens temperatures initially show a slight decline, with maximum values moving around 31-32°C on July 9-10. The picture changes over the following two days, from July 11-12, with a clear rise and the average estimates of the ensemble forecasts returning to around 35°C.

At the end of the ten-day period, the European forecasting system ECMWF ENS maintains a warmer scenario than the US forecasting system GEFS, while the increasing spread leaves open the possibility of even higher temperatures.

Thessaloniki shows a slight drop in temperature on July 9-10, followed by a gradual rise. From July 12-13 onwards, maximum temperatures generally move into the range of 34-35°C. However, the transition to warmer conditions is not yet accompanied by any indication of an extreme peak.

Larissa records perhaps the clearest warm signal among all six cities. After the drop to around 30°C near July 9, a rapid rise follows, with average estimates approaching or even exceeding 35°C. From July 12 onwards, the spread increases noticeably, while the trend towards a fairly warm period in Thessaly is strong.

In Patras, the change is milder. Maximum temperatures remain close to 30-31°C at the beginning of the second ten-day period and then gradually rise towards 33-34°C. The warming trend is present, Mr Kolydas notes, but it is clearly more restrained compared with Larissa and Athens.

Heraklion shows the smallest temperature variation, with maximum values remaining mainly between 30-33°C, with a slight increase after July 11-12. Finally, in Kavala, temperatures initially fall, with maximum values dropping close to 25-26°C around July 9, followed by a gradual recovery. The overall trend is upward, with no indication at present of an intense heat episode.
