Producers and traders operating in farmers’ markets have moved to suspend their strike mobilization after meetings with the Ministry of Development and the Ministry of National Economy and Finance.
Farmers’ markets across the country will reopen and operate normally from Friday (January 9), as “the issue of the presumptive taxation method, as well as the matter of the electronic delivery note for farmers’ market producers and vendors, will be re-examined,” producers and vendors note in their announcements.
According to a statement by the Pan-Attica Federation of Associations of Farmers’ Market Vendors, posted on social media, there has been a “positive development on the entirety of our demands from the Ministry of Finance, on a new basis.” The statement explains that the presumptive taxation method will be adjusted to reflect vendors’ actual incomes, while the electronic invoicing system will be implemented in a way that corresponds to the real operating conditions of farmers’ markets, both in the field and at market stalls. The federation clarifies that farmers’ markets will operate normally on Friday, while the planned action at the Renti wholesale produce market will not take place.
For their part, the Confederation of Producers and Professional Vendors of Industrial Goods in Greece’s Farmers’ Markets and the Federation of Farmers’ Market Producers note in their announcements that, following meetings at the Ministry of Development with Minister Takis Theodorikakos and at the Ministry of Finance with Deputy Ministers Giorgos Kotsiras and Thanos Petralias—also attended by the Governor of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue, Giorgos Pitsilis—it was decided to suspend indefinitely both the strike and the blockade of the wholesale market. At the same time, it is clarified that farmers’ markets will not operate tomorrow; however, they will return to full normality on Friday, January 9, 2026.
Finally, in its statement, the Confederation of Producers and Professional Vendors of Industrial Goods in Greece’s Farmers’ Markets emphasizes that the indefinite strike is being suspended, as the presumptive taxation method and the issue of the electronic delivery note for farmers’ market producers and vendors will be re-examined. It adds, however, that “if no decision is reached within ten days, we will return with dynamic mobilizations.”
Their demands
Earlier today, producers and professional vendors from farmers’ markets held a demonstration outside the Ministry of Development and the Ministry of Finance in Syntagma Square and were set to launch an open-ended strike, putting forward the following demands:
- Abolition of the presumptive taxation method
- Abolition of the electronic delivery note
- Support through a reduction in production costs and the withdrawal of additional taxation
- Amendment of Law 4849/2021 (regarding the operation of farmers’ markets)
