The procedures for the operation of the system for sending traffic violation fines captured by cameras on the streets of Attica have been expedited.

The procedures for the operation of the system that sends fines for traffic violations captured by cameras on the streets of Attica have been expedited, along with the fines being sent via mobile SMS, email, and the Gov platform.

Some developments had been previously announced in December, while others will now apply following the completion of necessary procedures with the Personal Data Protection Authority to ensure the legality of the camera system’s operation (which had previously been halted). This clears the way for the launch of the new system.

Thus, starting today, violations recorded by cameras (including those on the Attica Highway and the regional roads) will lead to the issuance of fines and documents sent via SMS, Gov, and email. The cameras detect violations such as red light violations, speeding, seatbelt and helmet violations, driving in bus lanes, and using a mobile phone while driving.

The recipients of the fines will have 13 days to submit a digital objection and schedule a digital appointment (via video call).

Fine payments will be electronic (via RF code), and updates on points in the Driver Behavior Control System (S.E.S.O) will be automatic. Additionally, the withdrawal of the driving license will be digital and will happen once the violation is recorded.

What remains from the initial plan for AI cameras

As stated in December by a representative of the Ministry of Digital Governance and Attica’s Regional Governor, Nikos Hardalias, the system tested from that month (which has already recorded more than 40,000 traffic violations to date) will enter its official phase when the Unified Electronic System for the Recording and Management of Violations is up and running.

This system, which is under development by the Ministry of Digital Governance, will connect the cameras installed by the Region, the Ministry of Transport, and Attica Highway, based on the recommendations of the Hellenic Police (ELAS) for the most dangerous roads in the area. The goal is for authorities to view the photo or video at the time of the violation, confirm it, and issue the fine on the same day.

However, it was ultimately decided that the “smart fines” system would be applied using the existing traffic system, which manages the cameras on the Attica Highway. This system will be overseen by the Road Safety and Surveillance Systems Authority (ODYSEAS).

Also, by June, there will be 388 cameras across Attica, though not all will be AI cameras. All of them will be capable of detecting violations like running a red light and exceeding the speed limit.
