Aegina is facing a serious problem with its drinking water, as due to a fault in the underwater pipeline, the water reaching the taps is unsuitable for drinking or any other use.

The residents of Aegina are dealing with a significant issue that complicates their daily lives, as the water reaching the island’s taps is not suitable for drinking or any other use.

According to MEGA, the problem is caused by a severe fault in the underwater water supply pipeline. As a result, the island is being temporarily supplied with water by Navy tankers and boreholes, but the water they provide is unsuitable for drinking. Consequently, residents are forced to use bottled water for their daily needs.

“The water is unsuitable for any use. We wash our bodies with fear, because there is a risk of even skin damage, as many have suffered,” said a resident of the island. “The water we’ve been using for a month is only for the toilet and mopping,” added another resident.

The fault in the underwater pipeline was first reported on December 17. The Attica Region, which conducted chemical and microbiological analyses, found exceedances in microbiological parameters and low chlorine levels. For this reason, 60,000 bottles of bottled water were distributed free of charge to residents.

The island’s associations have sent an urgent letter to the responsible authorities, demanding immediate restoration of the problem and official information about the water quality. The issue was extensively discussed during the Municipal Council meeting on February 4, 2026, with a large attendance of residents and representatives from associations, who expressed their concerns about the consequences of the lack of drinking water.

The restoration of the fault in the underwater pipeline is expected to be completed by the end of February, while an alternative solution for using a backup pipeline is also being considered. The only dialysis unit in the Argosaronic Gulf is at risk from using unsuitable water, further intensifying the residents’ concerns.
