Thriller with the arrest of a senior officer for espionage on behalf of China. He is said to have been attempting to recruit others.

A serious espionage case involving a senior officer of the Armed Forces was uncovered yesterday, Thursday (05/02). The officer had been under surveillance by the National Intelligence Service (EYP) and is said to have been providing classified and highly sensitive information to a country outside NATO, specifically China. He was arrested by the appropriate military authorities within the military base where he served.

He had access to technology development plans

According to information, the Armed Forces official had access to highly sensitive information concerning national security, defense, and the development of technology. He is believed to have electronically sent classified information to entities in China through his unit. The officer is a commander of an Air Force unit in Kavouri, and in recent times, he was reportedly attempting to recruit others for this activity, according to ERT.

Military sources stated that the officer’s arrest was decided just before he was about to pass on information regarding high technology in Greece to third parties. The officer is currently being interrogated by the competent military service and EYP and is said to have confessed the illegality of his actions involving the leaking of highly classified military information to third parties.

The leaked information relates to NATO plans

According to the latest information, checks are also being conducted in the officer’s professional environment, as there are indications that he may have tried to establish a network to further feed “third parties” with classified material.

Reports indicate that much of the material relates to NATO plans, which significantly changes the level of classification of the case, attracting particular attention from the Alliance, especially the United States.

Additionally, the high technology aspect is particularly concerning to military authorities as many defense-related elements are currently being upgraded.

Finally, the military services have informed the appropriate authorities, who will proceed with all necessary steps to notify the relevant parties about the incident.

It is worth mentioning that during the passage of the last omnibus bill, Minister Nikos Dendias made a special mention of Article 289, which pertains to the revocation of Greek citizenship in cases such as espionage.

The announcement of the General Staff of National Defence

This arrest took place within a military area, in cooperation and coordination with other state services (with the presence of an authorized prosecutorial authority), following clear indications of criminal acts according to the Military Penal Code, namely the collection and transmission of confidential military information to third parties, with the risk of causing harm to national interests.”
