The “Athena” tunnel boring machine has reached Evangelismos – The opening of the tunnel

The Katechaki-Evangelismos tunnel is now a reality, as the tunnel boring machine, which employs 300 workers from the AVAX-GHELLA-ALSTOM construction consortium, has reached its destination.

One of the two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) working on the construction of Line 4 of the Athens Metro has reached its destination, at the Evangelismos shaft.
The “Athina,” which started from Katehaki, has built a tunnel of 5.1 kilometers, and its head reached the Evangelismos shaft on Thursday (February 12), located at the intersection of Vasileos Konstantinou and Michalakopoulou streets.
It should be noted that this state-of-the-art TBM, built by AVAX, does not only bore the tunnel but also constructs it. Every time it excavates 1.5 meters, it places a corresponding concrete ring, leaving behind a completed tunnel.
So far, working in 24-hour shifts, the “Athina” and the AVAX team have placed 3,393 concrete rings, creating a tunnel path that passes through Goudi, Zografou, Ilisia, the University Campus, and Kessariani.
It is estimated that the amount of soil removed exceeds 400,000 cubic meters. The arrival of the first of the two tunnel boring machines working on the country’s largest public project is considered a significant milestone and is called a “breakthrough.”
