A 59-year-old taxi driver was arrested after it was found that he had systematically charged his customers double fare.

A 59-year-old taxi driver was arrested during the midday hours yesterday, Tuesday (24/02), in central Athens by officers of the O.E.P.T.A./Attica Traffic Police Directorate, after collecting excessive fares from passengers at least 56 times by unlawfully setting his taximeter to double tariff instead of single.

A case file was formed against him by the Athens Traffic Police Sub-Directorate for fraud and repeated collection of excessive fares.

Specifically, the 59-year-old taxi driver was spotted driving in central Athens by O.E.P.T.A. officers, and during an inspection it was found that he had set his taximeter to double tariff instead of the single tariff prescribed for midday hours.

Further checks by police revealed that over the past five days, the 59-year-old had set the taximeter to double tariff instead of single at least 56 times, collecting excessive fares from passengers. The arrested man was brought before the competent Public Prosecutor.
