The woman was found after falling from a 4th-floor window of the apartment building. Both had scratches and a neighbor heard a disturbance.

A thriller is unfolding on Kolokotroni Street in central Athens, with the circumstances surrounding the death of a young woman, from around 5 a.m., still unclear.

Suddenly, the sound of a window shattering was heard and the woman was found dead after falling into the building’s inner courtyard.

Earlier, she had been in a short-term rental apartment on the 3rd floor of the building, together with a 45-year-old Italian tourist who had rented it and had met the woman through an online application.

A neighbor heard a loud disturbance shortly before the incident. The Italian man did not open the door to police officers who were called to the scene; it was eventually opened by the owner using a code. Police brought the man in for questioning and he was taken to the Security Department to be examined.

Both he and the woman had scratches, indicating that a struggle had preceded the incident.

The scenarios under investigation

Authorities are examining the possibility that the woman was chased by the Italian and fled to the upper floor.

Having no way out, she may have broken the window in the shared area herself and attempted to climb down, or she may have been pushed by her pursuer.

The man being questioned claims he does not know what happened after the woman left the apartment, while the investigation is ongoing.

What the Italian man claims

The 43-year-old being examined by authorities stated that they argued and that the woman then left the apartment, and he does not know where she went or what she did.

“I heard screams, ‘I’m sorry baby, come back’”

Screams and intense exchanges were heard from the apartment shortly before the woman fell, according to a resident of the building.

“At around 4:20 a.m. I heard female screams outside on Kolokotroni Street. Around 4:30 the screams moved inside the building, right outside my room on the third floor. I don’t know if it was an argument. Shortly after, the screams stopped and were followed by a man’s voice. I don’t know exactly what happened.

I immediately called the police and stayed in my room. After all those screams and the man’s murmuring, around 4:45 a.m. I heard glass shatter. It was the glass on the fourth floor — it involved the breaking of the window and a fall. […]

I couldn’t understand what the man was saying. The woman was speaking in English, saying ‘baby open up, I’m sorry, come back’. I don’t know who they are or when they arrived,” said a third-floor resident who was disturbed by the incident.
