The amendment to the Joint Ministerial Decision (JMD) for the “Untouched Beaches” was signed by the Ministers of National Economy and Finance, Mr. Kyriakos Pierrakakis, and Environment and Energy, Mr. Stavros Papastavrou, aiming to improve the framework for environmental protection.
With the new decision, the number of beaches with high protection is increased from 238 to 251, incorporating new areas with significant aesthetic, geomorphological, and ecological value.
The decision aims to preserve the habitat types and the flora and fauna of these areas, which belong to the National Register of Areas of the European Ecological Network Natura 2000. In these areas, the granting of land for simple use and any other activity that could threaten their ecological integrity is prohibited.
