A female worker at a supermarket in Kalymnos was seriously injured on her hand by a meat grinder.

A work accident occurred recently at a supermarket in Kalymnos, resulting in the serious injury of a female worker’s hand during her duties.

According to a statement from the Labor Center of Northern Dodecanese, the worker had been hired as a cashier but was called upon to work in the butcher department without the necessary training.

While performing her duties, she was severely injured by the meat grinder, resulting in the loss of one finger and two phalanges from other fingers, according to reports from palmoskalymnou.gr.

The Labor Center highlights in its statement that “this particular store already has a history of intensifying work conditions and attempts to ‘exploit’ workers with serious deficiencies in health and safety measures.”

Additionally, the Labor Center notes the ongoing disregard for protective measures and that the Labor Inspection Services are understaffed. It points out that in Kalymnos, there is no local Labor Inspection, and the island falls under the jurisdiction of the one in Kos, “which takes years just to inspect businesses in Kos alone.”
