Ilioupoli: 17-year-old fights for her life – Authorities investigate possible scenarios

A 17-year-old lost her life, and another is fighting for her life after falling from the roof of an apartment building in Ilioupoli, early on Tuesday afternoon (12/5).

The two girls sustained very serious injuries, and ambulances from the EKAB and police forces rushed to the scene. The minors were transported to Asclepiio Voulas under police escort, with the journey taking about seven minutes.

The two 17-year-olds arrived at the hospital around 12:30 PM, and doctors immediately began heroic efforts to save their lives. One of the girls was brought in without consciousness, while the second was in extremely critical condition.

According to the medical statement, the minors were admitted to the resuscitation room, where intensive resuscitation efforts and imaging tests were carried out.

Despite the doctors’ efforts, which lasted over an hour, the first 17-year-old, who was brought in after a cardiac arrest, could not be revived, and her death was confirmed. The second 17-year-old was transferred to KAT hospital, where she remains intubated in critical condition.

According to ERT, the minor has suffered traumatic brain injuries, hemothorax, serious injuries to the pelvis, and multiple fractures, classifying her as a severely polytraumatized patient.

After a medical consultation held on Tuesday afternoon, it was decided to transfer her to KAT hospital. There, she underwent extensive imaging tests and efforts were made to stabilize her hemodynamically.

Medical sources cited by ERT reported that the minor was expected to undergo surgery for a neurosurgical procedure due to brain swelling combined with severe head injuries.

The medical staff remains constantly at the 17-year-old’s side.

The scenarios being investigated

On the roof of the apartment building, the backpack of one of the girls was found, inside of which there was a note from her explaining the reasons behind her desperate decision.

According to police sources, the girl mentioned in the note that she has been suffering from depression for three years and feared that she would not perform well in the national exams.

Authorities are investigating whether the second girl had also decided to jump with her friend or if she tried to prevent the other from jumping. No note was found from the second girl. Police sources suggest that the second girl might have tried to stop the first from jumping and may have tried to pull her back, but both ended up falling together.

How the fall happened

It is known that one of the girls lived in the apartment building. At some point, they both went up to the roof, from where they jumped.

The roof door was found locked, and police believe the two 17-year-olds locked it before committing the tragic act.

According to a neighbor’s testimony, the two 17-year-olds had asked the building manager for the keys to the roof. “My friend said, ‘where the keys are, that’s where we put them’. She didn’t take five steps before hearing the thud, the kids fell from the roof,” she said.

“I heard screams and then a loud crash. I turned my head and saw the two girls,” said a man who owns a store near the building.

He added: “I called the ambulance and the Emergency Response. The ambulance arrived very quickly, but before it came, I was close to the girl who was breathing, and I was talking to her, trying to give her strength to keep her senses. A lady came down from the first floor, who approached one of the girls and saw that she was breathing. Then, another guy came down, saying he was the brother of the girl.”

The Ilioupolis Police Station is conducting a preliminary investigation into the case.
