For yet another year, Greece secured top positions in the Blue Flag programme.

The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature announced the beaches, marinas and tourist boats in Greece that were awarded the Blue Flag distinction.

With 624 awarded beaches, Greece was once again ranked second worldwide among 51 countries.

It is worth noting that Greece continues to record a steady upward trend, with the number of awarded locations increasing every year and once again surpassing 600, while the country holds 14% of all awarded beaches among the 51 countries participating in the programme.

The regional unit of Halkidiki ranked first in Greece, with 93 Blue Flags awarded to beaches. The Region of Crete retained first place overall, with 154 Blue Flags awarded to its beaches.

Overall, the International Committee awarded 4,378 beaches, 747 marinas and 158 tourist boats worldwide.

The programme criteria

A. Cleanliness of sea and coast

“Excellent” bathing water quality, confirmed through sample inspections as defined by EU and national legislation.
No discharge of industrial or urban wastewater in the area without proper treatment and purification.
Adequate waste bins that are emptied regularly, as well as dedicated recycling bins.
Continuous and regular cleaning of the beach from litter, cigarette butts, etc.

B. Beach organisation

Continuous public information regarding bathing water quality, including the posting of official microbiological analysis results on the mandatory information board at each beach.
Action plans for dealing with accidental marine pollution, with immediate public notification.
Prohibition of vehicle and moped traffic on the beach.
Prohibition of free camping.
Adequate sanitary facilities with a controlled sewage system.

C. Visitor safety

Presence of trained and certified lifeguards on duty, in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy and relevant legislation, or immediate access to a telephone for emergencies, rescue equipment and first aid.
Accessibility and services for people with disabilities or reduced mobility (PWDs).

D. Nature protection and environmental awareness

Printed information and behavioural guidelines for the beach, as well as for areas with sensitive natural environments, flora and fauna in the coastal zone.
Organisation of activities by the beach management that demonstrate and implement its commitment to protecting the beach’s natural environment and the need for its preservation.
