Deputy Speaker of the Greek Parliament Olga Gerovasili announced her withdrawal from the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance.
In her statement, she said that she remains committed to the principles of the Left and the progressive political movement, stressing that her goal has always been to defend society and address the country’s problems.
Ms. Gerovasili noted that, despite the political difficulties and conflicts of recent years, she had stood “selflessly” by the party’s side, but she believes that “the goals and principles she serves are no longer represented by SYRIZA’s current structure.”
For this reason, she announced her decision to become an independent member of Parliament, leaving the party’s parliamentary group. As she explained, due to her institutional role as Deputy Speaker of Parliament, she will send the formal letter of resignation from the parliamentary group in the coming days, following consultation with the Speaker of Parliament.
It is recalled that Yiannis Ragousis announced his resignation from SYRIZA on Friday morning (17/7), adding to the wave of departures from the Koumoundourou headquarters.
Shortly afterwards, MP for Aetolia-Acarnania Miltiadis Zamparas also announced his decision to become independent and leave the party’s Parliamentary Group.
