Murder of Stavros Georgios: The 28-year-old appears at the Evelpidon police station to give his statement

The 28-year-old man arrested over the killing of lawyer Stavros Georgiou at his law office on 3rd September Street was brought before the courts at the former Evelpidon military academy shortly before 11:00 on Monday morning.

The defendant had been granted additional time to prepare his testimony and is currently appearing before the investigating magistrate.

He has been charged with intentional homicide committed in a calm state of mind.

According to what he has claimed so far about the circumstances of the lawyer’s death, he and the victim had consumed alcohol before a heated argument broke out. The 28-year-old is said to have admitted repeatedly striking the 73-year-old on the head and, at one point, hitting him against office furniture, causing fatal head injuries.

The victim’s computer is also at the centre of the investigation. The defendant allegedly took only the laptop, which he later sold for €50 in the Omonia area before going to hospital. He has, however, maintained that he did not take either the victim’s mobile phone or his wallet.

Timeline of the case

The criminal lawyer’s relatives had been trying to contact him throughout the day without success.

Late on Tuesday night, July 21, his two 16-year-old daughters went to the property and rang the doorbells, as they did not have keys.

The building’s caretaker let them in and entered the office himself. The premises also served as an apartment, as the victim frequently stayed there. Once inside, they discovered him dead.

More specifically, he was found naked on the bedroom floor, lying in a pool of blood and curled up in the foetal position.

His trousers had been placed on one chair and his shirt on another. However, there were no signs of disturbance or searching typically associated with a crime scene suggesting robbery as the motive.

What the post-mortem examination showed

The post-mortem examination indicated that no single weapon had been used. Instead, the victim had suffered a barrage of violent blows to the chest and head, delivered with fists and possibly kicks, as well as blows with a heavy object and against a surface, possibly the bed. These injuries caused fatal cranio-cerebral trauma.

From the outset, the crime scene, the condition of the premises and the position of the victim pointed to a personal motive.
