Tragedy struck in Chania on Sunday afternoon, when an 11-year-old child lost her life, despite the desperate efforts of doctors and rescuers to save her.
The child, who was on holiday in Crete with her parents, was found and pulled unconscious from a hotel swimming pool.
The circumstances under which the young girl ended up in the pool remain unknown at this stage.
Three doctors from a private medical centre in the area, which works with the hotel, immediately rushed to the scene, along with EKAV emergency responders and a nurse from the medical centre.
Rescuers and doctors immediately began resuscitation efforts, as the child was unconscious.
Efforts to revive her continued throughout her transfer to Chania General Hospital. A Hellenic Police patrol car also cleared the way along the Northern Road Axis of Crete (VOAK) so that the ambulance could reach the hospital as quickly as possible.
The 11-year-old girl was taken to the Emergency Department, where doctors continued resuscitation efforts using every available means.
