Athens-Sounio road crash: Police motorcycle collides with car, two officers injured

A car carrying four German tourists collided with a DIAS police motorcycle under circumstances that remain under investigation. One of the two injured officers remains hospitalized in a more serious condition.

A traffic accident involving a DIAS police motorcycle and a car carrying four German tourists occurred late on Saturday night, August 8, on Athens-Sounio Avenue.
The collision left two police officers injured. One was taken to the 401 General Military Hospital in Athens, where he remains hospitalized in a more serious condition, while the second officer was discharged after receiving first aid.
The crash occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. in the Pefko area, in front of the beach of the same name.
According to information available so far, the car was travelling along Athens-Sounio Avenue towards Sounio when its driver allegedly attempted to make a U-turn to head back towards Athens.
During the manoeuvre, the vehicle reportedly crossed the roadway and collided with the DIAS motorcycle, which was travelling in the opposite direction.
The section of the road where the accident occurred features a sharp bend and limited visibility. There is also an opening in the road used by buses near the crash site, which investigators are examining as the possible point where the driver attempted the U-turn.
U-turn under investigation, German driver tests negative for alcohol
According to information from the scene, the sharp bend is located approximately 30 to 40 metres before the point of impact, significantly restricting drivers’ visibility.
Investigators are examining the exact circumstances surrounding the collision, including the reported U-turn manoeuvre and the movements of both vehicles immediately before the crash.
The force of the impact threw both police officers from their motorcycle.
Fellow officers and emergency medical crews rushed to the scene and provided first aid before the injured officers were transported to hospital.
The German driver underwent a breathalyser test, which came back negative.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, with the Keratea Traffic Police Department conducting the preliminary inquiry.
