Dramatic timelapse video: The wildfire’s spread from Mount Cithaeron to Porto Germeno

Dramatic footage recorded by a timelapse camera installed at the summit of Mount Cithaeron by the E.RA.DIK. Association shows the swift expansion of the fire front across the mountain’s southern slopes.

Within just a few seconds, the camera recorded the devastating course of the wildfire, which broke out in southern Boeotia and spread towards Porto Germeno, Psatha and Kandyli, where firefighting forces continue to battle flare-ups.

The footage comes from a camera installed at the summit of Mount Cithaeron by the E.RA.DIK. Association, with the support of volunteers and friends of the organisation, as part of a network monitoring weather conditions and the natural environment.

The striking video shows the course of the forest fire and the fire front, which, fuelled by strong winds, moved towards the Porto Germeno area in the early hours of August 1.

Flames reaching tens of metres in height, a complete lack of control and the devastating burning of thousands of stremmas within just a few hours. The smoke plume was so intense that it generated small and larger pyrocumulus clouds.

The wildfire began in the long-suffering region of southern Boeotia and advanced almost as far as the Saronic Gulf, before being halted mainly by previously burned areas, the sea, or land with far less combustible material.
