OrangePress

Visitor numbers at the Acropolis have surged as people take advantage of free entry on the occasion of International Monuments Day to enjoy the Sacred Rock.

Athens is celebrating International Monuments Day today, Saturday (April 18), with an exceptionally high turnout at the Acropolis archaeological site compared to a typical day.

As reported by OrangePress, from early morning the area has been crowded with thousands of visitors, including both tourists and many locals, making use of the free entry to visit the Sacred Rock. This day has been designated by UNESCO and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) as World Monuments Day. The free entry to state-run museums and archaeological sites aims to raise public awareness about the protection and promotion of our cultural heritage.

Free admission to public archaeological sites is available on the following dates:

  • March 6th (Melina Mercouri Memorial Day)
  • April 18th (International Monuments Day)
  • May 18th (International Museum Day)
  • Last weekend of September (European Heritage Days)
  • October 28th (National Holiday)
  • First and third Sunday of each month from November 1st to March 31st of each year.
