Kypseli: Dead infant found inside suitcase

Police officers discovered a dead infant inside a suitcase in an apartment in Kypseli during an investigation launched following a report of drug use.

Police officers were confronted with a horrifying sight in Kypseli when they opened a suitcase and found a dead infant inside.
At noon, the owner of a short-term rental apartment on Thasou Street in Kypseli reported to police that a family staying at his property had not been paying him and was using drugs.
Before officers dispatched to the scene could arrive and carry out an inspection, a DIAS motorcycle police patrol happened to be passing along the street. The owner stopped the officers and repeated the allegations to them.
The officers went up to the apartment and found six people living there: a 43-year-old Greek man and his 28-year-old German wife, three minors — a 15-year-old girl and the couple’s two sons, aged 12 and 9 — as well as a 26-year-old man who said he was the 15-year-old’s partner.
The father, the 15-year-old girl and her partner were initially taken to the local police station after small quantities of drugs were found in their possession. When officers returned to the apartment to conduct a search of the property, they found the German woman and her underage sons preparing to leave, with their suitcases already packed.
When police opened one of the suitcases, they discovered a container holding the body of a dead, frozen infant.
The officers were stunned by the macabre discovery. When they questioned the German woman, she said the infant was her child, whom she had lost, and that she had been keeping the body in a freezer. Asked how long the body had been there, she initially said between one and two years, before later saying eight months.
All those involved have been taken to the Athens Security Police Sub-Directorate, where they are being questioned and statements are being taken from members of the family.
The investigation is in full progress. Statements will also be taken from neighbours in an effort to establish exactly what happened, while a post-mortem examination will be carried out on the infant to determine the time and cause of death.
