The drone, whose origin and mission are under investigation, was handed over by fishermen in Lefkada to the Ministry of Defence.

Fishermen from Vasiliki, Lefkada, carried out an operation to recover a mysterious unmanned surface vehicle (USV) after spotting the black speedboat inside a sea cave near Cape Doukato, also known as Kavos tis Kyras.

According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, the incident occurred on May 7, when local fishermen noticed the vessel in a hard-to-reach area along the coastline.

Reports state that the unmanned vessel still had its engine running at the time it was discovered, raising serious concerns about its origin and purpose.

The fishermen cautiously approached the USV, secured it, and then towed it to the port of Vasiliki, where it was initially handed over to the Coast Guard and subsequently transferred to the Ministry of National Defence, which has undertaken the custody and examination of the vessel. The incident has been officially recorded.

The vessel is described as small in size, black in colour, and capable of high speeds, carrying equipment suggestive of a military-type unmanned platform.

The incident has sparked heightened interest among Greek security authorities, as it represents an unusual case involving the discovery of a military-type unmanned maritime vehicle in Greek territorial waters.
