The Patriot missile battery, which strengthens Greece’s air defense, has arrived in Karpathos amidst concerns about the expansion and escalation of the warfront in the Middle East.
As reported by MEGA, military vehicles carrying the air defense system passed through the island’s main road to be placed at pre-designated sites.
The decision to send the air defense system to Karpathos was made following the two incidents of Iranian drone attacks in the area of the British base in Akrotiri, Cyprus.
When asked by the former head of the Hellenic Army General Staff, Major General Giorgos Kambas, why we sent the Patriot missile battery to Karapathos, he replied:
“The island has a large airport, which, it should be noted, we are trying to integrate into NATO’s planning, especially the American one. We want aircraft to be stationed in the area, even for exercises. The Turks believe that we cannot operate in this region. Therefore, Karapathos can serve as an intermediary station. The same role could also be played by the airport in Rhodes, if necessary.”
