A complete change in weather conditions is expected from the middle of the week onward, as the spring sunshine will gradually be replaced by more unstable weather that is expected to last for several days.
Meteorologists are warning of a period of increased instability, with local rain showers, downpours, and thunderstorms mainly affecting mainland areas, along with a temporary drop in temperature.
The main feature of the coming days will be a repeating weather pattern: relatively mild weather in the morning, followed by cloud development and weather phenomena from midday onward, sometimes becoming intense in certain areas.
Thodoris Kolydas: Spring instability
In a post, meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas spoke about typical spring instability that will mainly affect the mainland parts of the country.
According to his analysis, today, Thursday (14/5), local rain is expected in the Ionian Sea, northern mainland regions, and the northeastern Aegean. From midday onward, showers and isolated thunderstorms will also develop in other inland areas, while temperatures will continue to fall, especially across mainland Greece.
On Friday (15/5), the instability will mainly be limited to western and northern regions, bringing local weather phenomena and temporary rainfall. In many areas, visibility will also be reduced during the morning and evening hours.
On Saturday (16/5), cloud cover is expected to increase again, with rain or showers in the Ionian Sea, mainland regions, and the northern Aegean. On Sunday, the phenomena will weaken and become mostly confined to western and northern areas, while temperatures in the south will rise slightly.
More specifically, Thodoris Kolydas stated:
“Instability – A weather ‘normality’ for May
Over the next few days, the weather will maintain a spring-like but relatively unstable character, mainly across mainland regions. Due to the passage of systems from the north, local rain is expected on Thursday in the Ionian Sea, northern mainland areas, and the northeastern Aegean, while from midday onward showers or isolated thunderstorms will occur in other mainland regions as well. Temperatures will continue to decline, especially inland.
On Friday, the instability will mostly affect western and northern regions, with local rain or showers, while visibility in the morning and evening will be locally limited, particularly in western areas. On Saturday, cloud cover will increase rapidly and local rain or showers are expected in the Ionian Sea, mainland areas, and the northern Aegean.
On Sunday, the weather phenomena will be more limited, mainly in the west and north, while temperatures will rise slightly in the south.”
Klearchos Marousakis: “Ten days of showers and thunderstorms”
Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis also referred to a weather change beginning on Thursday, emphasizing that the country is entering a ten-day period of strong instability.
As he explained, the clash between colder air masses moving in from the north and warmer spring air masses will create conditions favorable for rain and thunderstorms, especially during the warmer hours of the day.
The regions expected to be most vulnerable to these conditions are Thessaly, Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace, the western and northern Aegean, as well as mountainous areas of the Peloponnese. Although the phenomena will generally be short-lived, they may locally become intense and be accompanied by hailstorms and strong lightning activity.
Temperatures will drop slightly, though no cold wave is expected, with temperatures remaining at levels normal for the season.
