A fine, believed to be the largest ever imposed in Greece for such offense, was imposed on a 63-year-old man on the island of Donousa for animal abuse.

A 63-year-old man has been arrested on the island of Donousa for animal abuse, receiving what is believed to be the largest financial penalty ever imposed in Greece for such offenses.

The fine, estimated at more than €1.7 million, was issued after police raided his property following a report of animal cruelty. Officers discovered 58 malnourished cats locked inside a fenced area containing disused rental rooms and a closed restaurant owned by the suspect.

Authorities described the scene as appalling, reflecting severe neglect and mistreatment of the animals. The total fine—currently around €1,740,000—is expected to rise further once additional violations are confirmed, including the absence of health records and microchips for the animals.

The man, who had previously come to police attention in Moschato (Athens) for similar offenses, was taken into custody and will be brought before the Naxos Prosecutor’s Office on felony charges under Greece’s animal protection law.
