Only a few days remain until Labor Day, one of the most significant days of the year for workers, as it has been established as a mandatory holiday with specific institutional and labor regulations. This day is celebrated every year as a day to recognize labor rights and the fight for better working conditions.
According to the legislation, Labor Day can only be moved to another working day under certain conditions. Specifically, when the day coincides with a Sunday, during Holy Week, or Easter Monday, the holiday can be moved by the decision of the Minister of Labor. In these cases, the holiday is not lost, but rather shifted to ensure that workers are guaranteed the total number of holidays. In previous years, such shifts have taken place, with the most recent example being last year, when Labor Day was moved due to its overlap with the Easter period, offering workers an additional day of rest.
This year, Labor Day falls on Friday, and there is no issue of shifting it due to Easter since the holiday has already passed. Therefore, it will be celebrated on May 1st without any changes. The day remains a mandatory holiday across the country, with exceptions for certain sectors that operate continuously, as per the law.
How is Labor Day Paid?
Labor Day is a national holiday for workers, with exceptions for certain businesses specified by law. While work on this day is allowed in exceptional cases, workers are entitled to a mandatory pay increase.
For daily wage workers, they are paid the regular daily wage plus a 75% increase.
As for monthly salaried workers, the calculations vary depending on the operational status of the business, but there is always a pay increase for working on a holiday.
Additionally, the day cannot be compensated with time off, as Labor Day is a legislated mandatory holiday and cannot be substituted with another day.
