Specialist bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled detonation of part of the approximately 300 kilograms of explosive material that had been found inside a barrel mounted on the bow of a sea drone discovered in Lefkada.
In the video broadcast by MEGA, the powerful explosion is first heard as a deafening blast, followed immediately by a huge mass of water being thrown into the air, illustrating the intensity of the detonation.
Honorary Admiral of the Hellenic Coast Guard Nikos Spanos, commenting on the incident, stressed that the shockwave created at such a shallow depth demonstrates the destructive force that could have developed if the drone had struck a target while carrying its full explosive payload.
Lefkada: This Was the Drone’s Most Likely Target
STAR TV, using exclusive footage, revealed on Sunday night (10/5) the drone’s possible targets.
Satellite images obtained by STAR show the Russian convoy that had been sailing in the Mediterranean in recent days. Specifically, the positions of the ships were recorded both south of Crete and near Malta.
International media outlets and expert analysts believe that these Russian vessels were the likely target of the sea drone, which was accidentally discovered by fishermen in Lefkada. The group of three Russian oil tankers, escorted by the frigate Kasatonov, was reportedly heading toward the port of Tartus in Syria.
“These vessels sail in open sea areas in international waters, patrol the region, and receive intelligence that at some point a Russian ship will pass through there, at which moment they attempt to strike it. It is essentially a guided surface torpedo,” Mr. Vangelis Xanthakis, an expert in unmanned vessel systems, told STAR.
The unmanned surface vessel, which was carrying 100 kilograms of explosives capable of cutting even a massive ship in half, is reportedly a purely military, Ukrainian-type “MAGURA V5”.
Sea Drone Base Possibly in Vlora, Albania or Western Libya
Two ports — one in the Adriatic and one in the Mediterranean — have come under the scrutiny of Greek security authorities. The first is in Vlora, Albania, and the second is the port of Misrata in western Libya. A recent investigation revealed that Ukraine maintains a military presence there, with more than 200 officers and drone specialists.
At the same time, the preliminary investigation into the discovery of the sea drone is ongoing under the supervision of the Lefkada Port Authority and the orders of the prosecutor’s office. The fishermen who towed the vessel to the port of Vasiliki testified that two Bulgarians were the first to spot it while fishing with rods on the rocks at Cape Dukato, and that they even helped detach it.
Questions remain as to whether the two foreign nationals have been called to testify by the authorities, whether it has been determined how they came to be there, and whether they are still on the island.
