The 44-year-old woman’s return to Rodopi would prove fatal, as her husband had allegedly planned her murder.

New details are emerging about the tragedy in Dialampi, Rodopi, where a 44-year-old woman was killed by her estranged husband.

The 53-year-old man allegedly attacked the woman with a knife inside their home on Wednesday afternoon, fatally injuring her. According to reports, two of the couple’s three children were at the residence at the time of the attack.

The 44-year-old was found by her son with a sharp-object wound to her neck and was taken to the General Hospital of Komotini, where doctors pronounced her dead.

Following the attack, the 53-year-old allegedly injured himself and ingested a toxic liquid, believed to have been diesel fuel. He was taken to hospital, where he remains hospitalized under police guard.

A criminal case has been filed against him for intentional homicide, domestic violence and violations of weapons legislation. Two knives were seized from the home.

Previous complaints and arrest

The case takes on even more serious dimensions as, according to information available so far, complaints had previously been filed against the 53-year-old.

In 2022, the 44-year-old had contacted the authorities and filed a complaint for threats. The Hellenic Police confirms that the man was arrested at the time in Heraklion, Crete, under the automatic-flagrante delicto procedure in connection with a domestic threat against his wife.

According to information reported by Mega, a total of five complaints had been recorded involving insults, threats and incidents of domestic violence, with some of them allegedly also co-signed by the couple’s children.

Meanwhile, the 53-year-old had reportedly been receiving medication for the past three years and, following prosecutorial intervention, had been placed under psychiatric supervision.

According to the same reports, the 44-year-old had approached the prosecutor’s office asking for her husband to be hospitalized, citing the problems she was experiencing. At the time, however, hospitalization was not deemed necessary.

People close to the woman’s family say that she had spoken about what she described as pathological jealousy on the part of her husband.

She returned for her daughter’s birthday and to file for divorce

The 44-year-old worked during the summer season at a hotel on Thasos and had returned to Rodopi to be close to her children and celebrate her young daughter’s birthday.

At the same time, according to reports, she had planned to formally file for divorce on Thursday.

The couple had been separated, but her return to the family home turned into a tragedy within hours.

The preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Komotini Department for the Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes, while a forensic examination and autopsy are expected to shed further light on the exact circumstances of the woman’s death.
