The two-week-old infant remains hospitalized in stable but serious condition at Venizeleio Hospital in Heraklion, after being transferred on Sunday night (13/9) from Chania Hospital with severe head injuries.
During the infant’s examination at the Emergency Department, doctors found that the newborn had suffered a brain hemorrhage and serious injuries and immediately notified the police.
The baby’s mother was arrested in connection with the case, and a case file was opened against her on charges of domestic violence and grievous bodily harm.
What the mother claimed
The woman, who according to reports is raising the child on her own, was brought before a prosecutor.
According to the same reports, she claimed that the baby was injured after falling from a considerable height, attributing the serious injuries to the fall.
Authorities, however, are continuing their investigation, as they are examining the possibility that the injuries were inflicted inside the home and by someone within the close family circle.
As part of the investigation, all available evidence is being collected and assessed in order to establish the exact circumstances under which the newborn was injured.
Meanwhile, doctors are closely monitoring the infant’s condition. According to the latest update, the baby remains in stable but serious condition.
